An adaptation of a series of Bauhaus/Op Art oil painting done by Josef Albers in 1965. Each of the six colorways available will be issued in limited edition of 200. Each scarf is hand-numbered and comes in a special box with an accompanying booklet about the artist and his work. One scarf from the series will be US $2,800 each (2000 Euros). At this price point, it’s meant to be treated as a true art piece, rather than a fashion accessory. They are currently available in select Hermes boutiques around the world for a limited time. There have been sighting in Paris, London, Munich, NYC Hermes boutiques.

A new ‘edge to edge’ technique was developed especially for the Albers-inspired scarves.

Each colorway has a specific name.

Hermes will do a numbered limited edition from now on with a different artist every year.

« Maître » et enseignant au Bauhaus, initiateur du mouvement Op Art, Josef Albers a, dès 1950, entamé une série baptisée Hommage au carré. La rencontre entre l’illustre foulard de soie Hermès et l’œuvre du peintre allemand était évidente.

Hermès possède une galerie d’art à Bruxelles. De par la préservation de ses savoir-faire et de ses métiers, son ouverture à des talents reconnus ou anonymes (en particulier pour la création des carrés de soie), la maison a tout d’une pépinière d’artistes. Elle peut désormais s’ajouter l’étiquette d’éditeur. Pierre-Alexis Dumas, directeur artistique, et Bali Barret, directrice artistique de la soie féminine, ont souhaité mettre à l’honneur le travail de Josef Albers en éditant six véritables tableaux sur soie, six carrés retraçant toute la recherche du peintre sur l’interaction des couleurs. Livrés dans de beaux coffrets, proposés en série limitée à deux cents exemplaires pour chaque modèle, ces carrés ont exigé la mise au point d’une nouvelle technique d’aplat de couleur, dite « bord à bord », et qui permet aux teintes de se toucher sans se superposer, ni être « serties » d’un trait. De vraies œuvres d’art.
